International coach Nick Perna shares a controversial “secret” used by top coaches and top skaters. Common wisdom in skating has skaters constantly trying to point their toes. But as Nick explains, there are times where straightening the free leg is so important that flexing the toes is usually a better solution.
Nick discusses this in detail, including how it applies to the landing movements (foot unhooking and pressing back), landing positions, camel spins, and spirals. In all cases where skaters have difficulty locking out the free leg, a flexed toe can be used. Nick recommends having skaters walk on their heels with their legs locked as a way to develop this feeling and apply it as necessary.
