Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch explains how she teaches the backspin to forward spin change of foot transition. This discussion results from a skater missing this transition on a repeating front sit to back sit to front sit spin. Charyl then has the skater demonstrate the desired step and push. To do this change of foot, the skater does a back outside three turn to end the back spin, followed by pushing “forward” on the forward inside edge of the axis skate into the front spin. Charyl has the skater do a back sit to forward sit to demonstrate the technique.
To build this skill, Charyl starts with a back three turn on the axis foot (not very fast). From the forward inside edge exit of the three turn the skater then sets the non-axis foot down on a backward inside edge. The skater then pushes on the forward inside edge of the axis foot and transfers the weight to the non-axis skate. The goal is to do the back spin and the front spin in the same spot, using the same center. She then has the skater demonstrate repeated front to back to front spins. The push from the forward inside edge allows the skater to keep the speed up in the overall change foot spin.
