International coach and jump specialist Chris Conte continues a group lesson covering drills and concepts for double toe loop development. In Part 1 he talked about some foundational concepts and exercises. In this video, Chris begins by progressing from the final exercise in the previous video to a single toe loop followed by a pirouette. Notice the controlled nature of the forward inside three turn and the relatively precise placement of the free leg. After the skaters have had a chance to build consistency with the single into pirouette, Chris has them do double toes from the forward inside three turn. A common error he mentions is not getting under the jump. He says, “If you’ve ever played table tennis, you know how you’ll smash over the ball? Kids will do that on toe loops really bad. You want to get under the ball and up.”
Chris highlights the “lengthen” as part of the reach and the “slingshot” of the pivot through. And he explains how he likes this in toe loop combination jumps. He discusses some common errors including tapping too close, and he introduces the concept of the full reach and tapping “halfway back” or halfway back from the full reach to the skating foot.
To work on toe loop combinations, Chris uses waltz jump toe loop for this class. He wants the landing of the toe loop to be quite precise with the free leg in a specific position he discussed in Part 1. From there the reach and rest of the jump is the same as just practiced. One of the demonstrating skaters is losing alignment and core control, so Chris helps her get over her hip properly. Next he has the class do waltz jump double toe loops, and again talks about the idea of the reach and pick placement as “all the way out (reach), halfway back (tap).”
