Back Camel Tips (Charyl Brusch)

Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues working with a skater on a variety of spins. In the previous videos the focus was on sit spin and camel spin and layback spin. In this video, Charyl tackles the back camel. She has the skater start at a standstill and she holds on so the skater rides the edge longer. She wants the skater to step off the line and ride the forward inside edge long enough so that the free leg and free arm are parallel to that line. At that time the skater is allowed to do the forward inside three turn and sweep the free arm to create the spin. After assisting on a couple attempts, Charyl has the skater attempt the spin again from a standstill but without assistance, noting that the initial edge lobe size cannot be too big (and notice how the skater’s free arm sweeps back way too soon).

To help increase the energy level of the entry, Charyl has the skater use a single push prior to the step/push into the spin. Check out how she again uses the line to help create a repeatable movement pattern. Again the skater sweeps the free arm too fast and Charyl mentions this but focuses instead on keeping the center of the upper body over the skating foot (“keep your body to the right when you step, leave it to the right”). In the spin Charyl asks the skater to keep the skating side arm higher. She says, “Most people when they turn into their back camel, that right shoulder drops so I really keep that side lifting up and I do it on flying camel also so that when you land or when you start spinning it doesn’t start bobbling at all.”

In the last portion of this video Charyl focuses on the free leg turn-out. Charyl says, “Turn your toes up towards the ceiling a little more and right arm lift.” This turn-out stacks the hips for balance and helps create the pleasing look of a good back camel. The free foot should be turned out/up with the foot behind the shoulder. Charyl tells the skater to squeeze the skating shoulder towards the free hip.
