Figure skating strength and conditioning expert Elizabeth Mullins continues an off-ice class for figure skaters, focusing on athlete strength and mobility and coordination/balance. In this kind of class, the order of exercises is important so make sure to watch Part 1 and Part 2. In this video, Elizabeth starts the class with “crossover to base position” where base position is the classic athletic stance. She explains the goal is to move across the room keeping the core (belly button) at the same height, pushing off the outside foot to cover distance and get there quick. As a correction for one of the athletes, Elizabeth notes she wants them to be able to “rotate your base” which allows the lower body to turn toward the direction of travel without affecting the upper body which faces sideways to the direction of travel throughout. This is a stop and go exercise.
The next exercise is “crossover to base, side shuffle” which combines the previous exercise with a side shuffle which does not turn the base. Thus the base is turning for the crossover and remaining square for the side shuffle and this takes some coordination and practice to master for quickness and explosiveness. Again the goal is to stay down and keep the upper body at the same height throughout the movement. There is no stopping in this exercise as the crossover leads directly to the side shuffle to another crossover and so on.
