Double Loop Combination Jumps – Part 2 (Josh Farris)

Coach Josh Farris (World Junior Champion, US National medalist, Four Continents medalist) continues working with a high level class of skaters on double loop combination jumps. In Part 1 the class focused on the necessary timing and need to remain on the axis side of the jump throughout. To start this short video, Josh has the class do single loop single loop single loop double loop double loop. The purpose of this kind of drill is to use repetition to feel the appropriate timing for the double loop in combination. It also has the benefit of highlighting if a skater has a “bad habit” of releasing the upper body out to the non-axis side, thus destroying the necessary alignment over the axis side that is so important for a double or triple loop in combination. Josh says, “On the exercise if you’re outside the circle on even one you’re going to keep going outside the circle.” Josh notes that this exercise can be extended to more double loops in combination or even triple loops.

The next exercise is backspin double loop double loop. While the class tries this exercise Josh says, “Hold the right (axis) side back.” You can find more details on the backspin double loop here. Doing two double loops in this exercise is again excellent training for the necessary timing and alignment for double loop combo jumps.
