Figure skating specialist coach and Champion Cords inventor Sheila Thelen explains and demonstrates how to use the cords to improve arm awareness, resulting in better lines and overall upper body carriage. She begins by showing how to create a second handle/loop to place the hand through (the cords already have a loop on one end), and how the skater holds the cord properly around the fingers/palm. A great pro tip is to put the metal hook on top of the hand to reduce the chance of injury in case of a fall.
With the arms stretched, the cord provides tension which helps skaters be more aware of their arms and their arm, hand, and shoulder positions. The cord can be stretched in front of the body or behind the body, and it will feel a bit different to the skater. Sheila has the skater perform a single lutz (with “Russian entrance”) with focus on arms throughout the entry as well as the jump landing. The demonstrating skater preferred the cord in front for landings, but behind the back for the entry steps and shoulder movements as well as the jump itself.
