Figure skating coach and certified strength and conditioning expert Kristina Anderson explains the importance of massaging the feet. Skaters (and coaches!) spend a significant amount of time in their skates, which are very restrictive in terms of foot movement. Normal foot strength and mobility can be enhanced using self-massage techniques. Kristina shows how to use a tennis ball and a golf ball to loosen tight muscles in the foot (leaving socks on), and stretch the 12 joints of the foot to improve mobility and blood flow. She also offers a general recommendation for skaters to do at least some activities (such as stretching or yoga) in bare feet, rather than in shoes. As always, massage, stretching, and mobility exercises are best done in a warm environment.
