In this video from a few years ago, World and Olympic figure skating coach Audrey Weisiger talks about walleys during an on-ice lutz class at one of her acclaimed Grassroots to Champions seminars. (The earlier parts of this class are here: Part 1, Part 2) Audrey’s goal in this video is to get the class to use a walley as a entrance/setup for a lutz. However, the class struggles with walleys, and although Audrey does not offer much in the way of walley tips, there are some decent demonstrations.
The idea for a walley entrance for lutz is the following. If skaters can perform a walley in their unnatural rotation direction, they land/exit on a back outside edge that can be used as the lutz take-off edge. Obviously this is very difficult, even for skaters with good walley and good lutz technique, so it clearly qualifies as a difficult entry in IJS scoring. There are many potential uses of walleys, so Audrey encourages this group to work on them and master them together.
