Pancake Spin (Charyl Brusch)

Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch continues working with a skater on a variety of spins. In the previous videos the focus was on sit spin, camel spin, layback spin, back camel spin, back camel back sit combobroken leg sit spin, and bullet or sit front variation with entry tips. In this video, Charyl and the skater work on the pancake spin which is another sit front variation. In the initial spin demonstration, the skater sits too low as the hips are well below the skating knee. To address this Charyl has the skater sit into the desired position at a standstill in the hockey box doorway. To raise the hips and flatten the back, Charyl encourages the skater to “go forward more, through the doorway with your upper body” rather than asking for a direct change in hip placement and knee bend.

On the second attempt, Charyl observes, “Your arms are in the way.” She shows the skater how to place both elbows on the side of the legs to get a good position with leverage to pull the upper body down. On the next attempt, Charyl finally addresses the fact that this skater’s base sit spin is too low to comfortably go to the pancake. As a solution she suggests just going directly into the variation, rather than starting in the base position. Charyl then has the skater glide backward slowly and hit the desired pancake position. She notes, “That’s like 10 times harder to do that than it is in the spin.” Nevertheless, this skater continues to struggle with the position and balance while spinning and Charyl even suggests using a camel spin prior to the pancake to minimize the entry errors, with no results.
