Figure skating strength and conditioning expert Elizabeth Mullins finishes an off-ice class for figure skaters, focusing on athlete strength and mobility and coordination/balance. In this kind of class, the order of exercises is important so make sure to watch Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, and Part 7. In this short video, Elizabeth has the class do a coordination exercise that combines tossing and catching a ball with an h-position (common skating position) balanced position.
To do this exercise, skaters begin by standing on one leg in an h-position, with a tennis ball or lacrosse ball in the standing side hand. Then they toss the ball into the air, tap the upper leg of the opposite leg (in h-position), and then catch the ball with the same hand while remaining balanced in h-position. Elizabeth has the class do this exercise for 5 repetitions on each side. This kind of exercise builds overall coordination, balance, quickness, and awareness which are helpful for jump development on the ice.
