Spin specialist Kim Ryan continues a class on off-ice spin training. In Part 1 she explained and demonstrated in detail how to get started spinning off the ice in a repeatable and safe way. In Part 2 the class continued working on upright spins, advancing to forward and backward scratch spins with arm variations. In Part 3, the focus remains the same as Part 2 with additional insights and a clear process for developing skill. In this video, Kim teaches the class how to do an eggbeater off the ice.
The eggbeater (upright forward) goes by many names including umbrella, table top, flamingo, and lollipop. Kim says, “I like this spin for the spinboard because you have a lot going on.” She demonstrates and explains the process for the forward eggbeater, including the foot and leg grab with both hands/arms. Kim notes that it’s valuable to keep moving through the positions, even if the spinning movement stops. After a number of attempts from the forward spin, they switch to practicing the back eggbeater. She says, “Two revs in basic position. If you’re not balanced just cut your losses and start over again.” She also says, “Make sure when you get your foot you’re pulling it all the way up and then squeeze it all the way down” to finish the backspin.
After a question from the class, Kim explains how she likes to grab the front of the foot and the front of the knee. She says, “Really why I like this spin off ice and on ice is because it is a really good segue for doing a pancake in the sit spin, and then doing an I or a Y-spin.”
At the end of the video, Kim is trying to help a skater who is bending into almost a pancake sit spin version. For skaters with this problem the solution is to keep the skating leg straight or nearly straight while making the grab.
