Off-Ice Jump Power – Dead Stop Snatch Part 2 (Matthew Blair Davis)

Figure skating strength and conditioning expert Matthew Blair Davis continues his series on off-ice jump power training. (All of Matthew’s videos on this topic can be found on his biography page here.) This video is a follow up to his discussion of the dead stop snatch with kettlebell. In this video, Matthew shows a new variation of the dead stop snatch on one leg.

This is an outstanding exercise for figure skaters, not only for one leg jump power generation (which is the point of this series), but also for building general body awareness, core conditioning, and engaging and strengthening smaller stabilizing muscles in the hips and core.

To do the exercise correctly, Matthew wants the skater to use a “fast speed on the way up” and a “slow speed controlled on the way down.” He discusses how the skater can drive the knee of the free leg through and up. The athlete should exhale on the snatch to the top, and inhale during the descent. Notice how challenging this exercise is even for this very strong and well-trained athlete.
