More Axel and Double Axel Development – Part 2 (Chris Conte)

International coach and jump specialist Chris Conte continues a series of videos focusing on development ideas for single, double, and triple axel. In Part 1 he focused on the single axel and some exercises and details to build a double axel. In this video, Chris works with two skaters on double axel, using the pole harness to allow for safe attempts as well as axis correction and air time assistance.

He introduces the first skater and notes she used to have a problem jumping into the circle. To address this Chris says, “We’ve used waltz threes at a very quick tempo with the head very still to try to straighten the jump out. And I’ve shortened her take-off edge by quite a bit.” This shorter take-off edge reduces the time the skater has to be able to jump into the circle. We get to see the full exercise and setup to the double axel for this skater. On the attempts Chris tells the skater, “Don’t hesitate.” When looking at the video he notes the take-off edge is still too deep and coming around into the circle. He explains to us that off the pole this double axel has axis issues (tilting outside the circle).

The next skater is a “powerhouse” and Chris likes her take-off but wants her to get to a neater air position. He explains he is providing very little help with the pole harness. When looking at the video Chris wants the skater to get to ankle contact sooner. Chris shortens the pole (as a way to build skater confidence) and eventually has the skater try a double axel off the pole. He notes that her take-off climb isn’t quite as good when she is not assisted.
