International coach and jump specialist Chris Conte begins a series of videos focusing on development ideas for single, double, and triple axel. He begins by giving us a roadmap of where these videos will take us. Then he has his skaters watch some video, and he points out depth of knee bend and the full curve of the take-off edge. He also discusses timing saying, “Some people will go to a slightly longer timing and a quick ending, some people will do very short.” In terms of the take-off edge, Chris describes it as “about a quarter of a circle.”
Next Chris shares a simple exercise intended to help skaters create rotational energy from the take-off edge yet maintain flow or jump direction. He has them ride the take-off edge and get to the sideways take-off moment, then do a series of side hops to mimic the jump flow in the air (without rotation). He reminds the skaters to clearly hit the toe pick at the simulated take-off moment, and he also describes these movements as being similar to a waltz three turn (which is another classic exercise to help develop flow of an axel). He says, “Really that’s all a double axel is… [first half of] an outside three turn and you keep going up.” He then has the skaters do single axel to pirouette and shares feedback for a few attempts.
