Coach and choreographer Kate Charbonneau finishes a choreography session with a young skater to build a new low level program. In Part 1 Kate got to know the skater a bit and challenged the skater with some new movements. In Part 2 she laid out a majority of the skater’s program utilizing the skills from Part 1. In Part 3, Kate finished the program and reworked a few details. In this video the focus is on speeding up the skating, improving the presentation, and finishing on time.
Picking up from the previous video, Kate skates the program again with the skater (and we see a few moments throughout). At the end of the program, the skater is roughly 3 second late for the whole program and Kate asks, “Do you think you can be 3 seconds faster than that?” The obvious answer is yes, with more practice. At this point Kate has the skater run through the entire program without music a couple more times to get the details “stuck in your head.” The first time is for remembering the program, and the second is to skate faster and with more confidence. After additional comments, she has the skater skate the program yet again, but this time with the music.
Kate notes, “Most of the programs I make for kids this level and even up to axel have a really hard time getting to the end of the music from probably the first week. But I don’t worry because I know they will really gain confidence and speed pretty easily.” Kate spends some time polishing the program, working on arm positions and spin positions (improved technique), and she finishes the lesson with words of encouragement.
