Double Toe Loop Lesson (Jackie Brenner)

National level coach Jackie Brenner continues a lesson with a skater who is moving from the Preliminary level all the way to Intermediate competition level. (See Part 1 and Part 2 and Part 3 of the lesson.) After the skater performs a double toe loop from a forward inside three turn, Jackie talks a little about the decisions that coaches face to address common issues. Obviously there are different entries, and Jackie lists the three most common: forward inside three turn, forward outside drop three turn, and directly from back crossovers. She notes, “I think the inside three (entrance) is volatile at times because it can be really deep and creates a downward tap, a heavy tap.”

Rather than change entrances, Jackie decides to work on the jump from the forward inside three turn. She begins by talking about the pattern, suggesting the skater push to the forward inside three turn entry on more of a diagonal. This helps maintain jump directional momentum based on the mechanics of the turn so the exit of the three turn allows for a jump that is parallel to the “line of travel” or original entry direction. She says, “The three needs to be very flat and straight like a piece of footwork, and also have your hips gathered underneath you.”

Jackie uses the phrase “long and low, tap and go” which highlights the idea of a smooth three turn and the necessary reach without significant knee action up and down (makes entry “quiet”). After another attempt, Jackie warns against allowing skaters to drag the picking foot on the forward inside three turn entry edge. Skaters will do this if they lack balance/control on one foot. Jackie talks about 5 things happening at take-off: drive it out, tap, scissor cross, turn, jump. As in previous parts of the lesson she also mentions keeping the arms quiet and near the rib cage as they come through. She then mentions head anchoring and notes the head is “last to the party.” The skater finishes this lesson with another jump showing some of the desired corrections.
