Coach Josh Farris (World Junior Champion, US National medalist, Four Continents medalist) continues his presentation on double loop combination jumps, this time with a lower level class than in Part 1 and Part 2. In this video, he begins with the backspin double loop double loop he finished the previous video with. This lower level class really struggles at first, and Josh reminds them of the need to remain aligned over the axis side, and have an overall core twist toward the axis side. To some skaters this feels like a hip twist, to others it feels like a shoulder twist, and to others a turn or twist at the axis foot/anke/knee.
Josh explains that this exercise is fantastic at showing a skater’s bad habits on double loop because skaters that tend to throw a part of their body out to the non-axis side at take-off have a much harder time returning to a controlled position allowing for the second jump. As a simplification to help this class, Josh recommends a backspin single loop single loop to work on alignment and twist. He also encourages those who can do the double double exercise to increase the difficulty by attempting a backspin double loop double loop double loop (3 jumps). We see one skater at the end complete this exercise with solid form.
