World and Olympic coach Tom Zakrajsek explains an exercise that combines both the flip and lutz, where the focus is on rotational control and edge quality of the entrances. The basic exercise is simple in concept and uses a hockey line across the rink as an axis. The exercise consists of 3 consecutive forward outside three turns followed by a forward outside three turn into the flip, where the skater then collects the feet and performs three consecutive back outside edges and performs a lutz on the third lobe. Thus the exercise moves across the ice into the flip and back across the ice in the other direction for the lutz.
Tom then explains that skaters can do double flip and double lutz (or eventually triples) but he prefers singles for this class so they are mindful of specific details of the three turns leading to the flip (awareness of the edge/direction change and control of exit edge) and the back outside edges leading to the lutz (alignment). Tom recommends using the entire line from boards to boards to create and maintain speed/flow. At the end of the video, Tom explains he wants mindful and quality pushes from a basic T-position for the three turns.
