Combination Spin With Non-Basic Position – Fine Tuning (Kim Ryan)

Spin specialist Kim Ryan finishes her lesson with a skater working on a combination spin that includes interesting transitions and a non-basic position with a flat back (see the previous video here). In this video, Kim offers helpful reminders about how to conserve spin speed and energy, and she offers tips for adding revolutions in each position to move toward mastery.

Prior to the first attempt, Kim talks briefly about “holding on to all that energy” to ensure the spin continues seamlessly through the position transitions. In the first attempt, there isn’t enough rotations in the up-camel, so Kim talks about extending each position from 2 to 3 rotations and then to 4 and beyond to truly master the spin and make it competitive. To remove the concern about having enough energy to do the backspin portion, Kim has the skater just practice the front-side positions so she can focus on holding the up-camel.

Kim suggests performing the catch as quickly as possible to make it easier to get revs in the position variation. But trying for the catch too early can result in loss of balance and spin integrity as the skater demonstrates in the next attempt. The skater finishes with a solid attempt with necessary rotations for the entire spin.
