Big Muscle Backspin – More (Tom Zakrajsek)

In this short video, World and Olympic coach Tom Zakrajsek returns to his discussion of the “big muscle backspin” as a tool for improving jump air position. In a previous video, Tom introduced the concept and shared his ideas about how to make a basic backspin into a more useful jump training tool. In this video, Tom queues the skater verbally, “Fast, faster, out” as a way to ensure the skater hits an efficient position with maximum spin speed and then exits the spin at that maximum speed.

To do this well, the skater must keep a tight core, and Tom wants the elbows down during the fastest part of the spin. He also explains the proper hip motion for the backspin entry to avoid “squatting at the start of the spin.” Tom wants the skater to get the skating hip forward and get to the “hoop triangle position” within one revolution and he describes this overall motion as a “snap.”
