USFS Junior Skating Skills – Part 2, Forward and Backward Inside Rockers (Kate Charbonneau)

Coach and choreographer Kate Charbonneau continues a series of videos on the USFS Junior Skating Skills (Moves in the Field) Test. In Part 1 she covered the Forward and Backward Outside Rockers pattern. In this video she discusses the Forward and Backward Inside Rockers and she begins by noting the importance of a consistent lobe size and rhythmic timing of the pattern. She says, “I like to use a waltz timing on counters and these Junior rockers.” Next she has a demonstrator skate the pattern while she counts for us. Kate then skates part of the pattern to show how it looks when performed at a very high level. She reminds the viewer to limit intro steps to 8.

Kate notes that the inside rockers are generally easier for skaters than the outside rockers. A common error for skaters is releasing the shoulders after the forward inside rocker rather than staying fully twisted to the standing side (outside the circle). With this error the shoulders immediately twist back and typically force the skater to put the other foot down prematurely or without being able to push with any power.

Next Kate shows an exercise utilizing power pulls to help fix alignment and edge pressure issues. The exercise consists of a forward inside rocker followed by two power pulls and then a step to the other foot (back inside edge). Kate explains that she uses the power pulls as a development tool for all turns (and especially brackets).
