Sit Spin Variations – Bullet, Mushroom (Charyl Brusch)

Figure skating spin specialist Charyl Brusch gives a spin lesson, covering one sit forward variation she calls the bullet and one sit back variation she calls the mushroom. This video is the final part of this lesson, and the previous parts can be found at Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4, although each video can stand on its own.

For the bullet, Charyl focuses on getting the skater’s back “forward more” rather than having it quite so rounded. Assisting the skater at a standstill, Charyl talks about the desired position, including the leg/foot grab, the elbows, the hips, and the head. Ultimately, Charyl is working to get the lower back flatter with the hips further back. She also wants the skater to get to the desired position much faster (“drop within two”), but this requires practice.

Charyl again assists the skater at a standstill to get into the desire position for the mushroom. One of the keys is lining up the middle of the body over the skating knee, but also notice the repeated focus on getting the body forward more. For the transition from the bullet to the mushroom, Charyl wants the skater not to stand up so much, and shows how the transition should work. The idea is to keep the free foot in place from the bullet to the mushroom while allowing the rest of the body to turn until the free leg is tucked behind. She says, “Leave your leg where it is and turn away from it.”
