Remote Off-Ice Video Jump Lesson – Part 10 (Nick Perna)

International coach and jump specialist Nick Perna walks us through a remote off-ice video jump lesson. We can’t hear what Nick is saying to his skater, but he talks over the entire lesson with detailed information about what is going on. In Part 1, Nick had the skater warming up with a jump rope. In Part 2, he did some “special” walking warm up exercises. In Part 3, he explained the sprung-floor jumping platform his skater was using and began half turns. In Part 4 he did full turns and one foot landings, and in Part 5 he focused on axis with some turning hops in d-position. In Part 6 he shared a general jump walk-through as well as air position insights, and in Part 7 he worked on waltz-jump and axel take-off details. Part 8 was devoted to off-ice loop and waltz-loop combination and Part 9 was focused on off-ice axel preparation drills.

In this video, which is the last in the series, Nick continues to work toward a successful off-ice axel with this adult skater. He builds on the previous lesson with another drill that combines the “axel hop” (also called “bell jump” or “half axel” or “once around”) followed by a two foot turn to backwards. The goal is to land the axel hop forward on two feet and then do a simple half rotation two foot air turn to backwards. Next up, Nick has the skater attempt a full rotation axel, but land on two feet. This skater has not yet successfully landed an axel, either on the ice or off, so getting full rotation and landing on two feet is a necessary first accomplishment. To increase the energy and hopefully get more rotation in the air, Nick has the skater do a “run up” into the axel and the skater nearly gets all the way backward.

We hope you enjoyed all the videos in this series. See all videos in this series: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10
