Periodization: Considerations for Training Schedule (Kristina Anderson)

In this short video, figure skating coach and strength and conditioning expert Kristina Anderson discusses important considerations coaches and trainers need to keep in mind when laying out a specific athlete’s off-ice and on-ice training regimen. Ultimately, training should attempt to maximize overall progress to meet specific goals, typically a specific figure skating competition or series of competitions. Finding the right combination of stress and recovery is necessary to optimize the entire process, and Kristina explains some of the concepts that need to be addressed.

Specifically, stress levels on the athlete both inside and outside the rink may vary dramatically throughout the year. But as Kristina notes, some events or activities such as school and schoolwork may create mental or emotional stress, but reduce dietary stress (more consistent meals, better nutrition). Head coaches and off-ice trainers not only need to work together to address actual training stress, but they need to take into account the athlete’s nutrition and sleep and other potential outside stressors. Getting enough quality sleep is absolutely critical to maximize athletic progress, and quality nutrition is also important for athletes trying to optimize their overall progress. By improving sleep (recovery) and nutrition and minimizing emotional stress (school, excessive competition schedule, etc), athletes can handle higher levels of physical stress associated with on-ice and off-ice training, especially if they are also stretching and doing proper post-workout recovery training. This ability to train harder ultimately allows athletes to optimize their training for specific upcoming events or timelines.
