Figure Skating Off-ice Training: Off ice class – Part 4 (Kori Ade)

This video is a continuation of a multi-part off-ice jump class by Kori Ade.  In Part 1, Kori had the class do heel clicks and air turn variations. In Part 2, Kori has the class do exercises for rhythm, quickness, and balance.  In Part 3, the focus was on flying sit spins and flying camels.

In this video, Kori does straight line waltz jump and axel drills.  She initially has the skaters walk in a straight line and do a waltz jump.  She doesn’t want them to “prep” for the jump in any way.  Next she switches to waltz jump “bell jumps” where the skaters bring their feet together in the air.  Finally the class does axel.  Kori focuses on the walking entry so the skaters don’t need to speed up before stepping into the jump.

The purpose of these drills is to help skaters keep the flow for on-ice axels and to prevent spinning into the take-off.  Compare this approach to a more complete treatment of off-ice axels by Nick Perna.
